A web magazine has an essay on the question “why are there so many romance films about Christmas”? The author comes down on “American Christmas is about family and to have a family two people have to decide they like each other”
Somewhat late in life I have become a fairly frequent romance reader, especially where the romance genre overlaps with other genres I’ve favored for decades, including science fiction, urban fantasy, and BDSM/erotica. One of the first things I noticed was how many romances are about finding, making, or joining a family. This is especially true in series books, where all the friends of the protags in the first book get hitched up in book after book until they’re a huge crew of tightly-knit couples that function as (or better than) the traditional family does. So the Christmas romance explanation makes perfect sense to me.
