Ring Of Sodomy
Except for the script looking vaguely Arabic in appearance to my untrained eye, I know not a thing about the cultural provenance of this vintage-looking happy ring of sodomy:
I even found it on some malware-infested website published in some other alphabet I do not know, and it was in the company of a bunch of “borrowed” images there, so your guess is as good as mine.

about a month ago on public television, i saw a dance performance (i hesitate to say recital, because of the level of the dancers, and of the university) by the performing arts department of Brigham young university, consisting of many, many various folk and culturally traditional dances from around the world.
one of the eastern european countries (i regret that i can’t remember which) had a dance in which the men and women danced separately, and the men danced in a sort of circle/game, wherein they would stand in a manner VERY similar to this one, and take the hat form the man in front of him and put it on his own head (because HIS hat had been taken by the man behind him!) the goal of the game is to go fast enough that somebody loses a hat, and then they are “out”.and the game continues until there are only two men and two hats. it was very amusing, really.
they were so VERY close to each other, and the hats were extremely similar to the hats pictured here! i wonder if this comes from that hat-stealing game? *grins* it would certainly make it more interesting! (though much less likely to be performed at BYU!!)

I’m certain this was displayed as part of the “Seduced” exhibition at London’s Barbican Gallery recently (www.barbican.org.uk). Alas, I don’t have the catalogue to check the provenance.

This is most definitely not sanskrit, which uses the devanagri script. This is possibly a picture from Bulgaria, where the Saracens landed in the 9th Century AD, thus establishing Arabic and Islam. This might be one of the sights that caught their eye- lets not forget how the word buggery came about!
