Ask You? Nah, We Have An Inkling…
I get that people have the right to be insulting and aggressive about their public speech. But if they transgress what I see as the bounds of civil discourse whilst exercising their right to free speech, then I have no trouble at all with other people doing the same while mocking them. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but they do make for a more comfortable public space than allowing the first wrong to go unchallenged:

Yup. I think this guy was on campus awhile ago. Or maybe I’m thinking of the guy who had a list of people going to hell. I fit into 8/10 of his categories =).
First thing that popped into my mind when I saw the sign was that it was the Westboro Baptist Church bunch.
I think I recognize the location here. Any info on it?
That’s some sign he’s got there. I take it he’s on Wall Street somewhere?
Actually in this case, somehow it comes out right. He’s making his statement, and they’re making theirs. We judge him to be in the wrong, but he’d probably do the same with us. As long as we’re all willing to let it go after having said our piece, it’s okay. He doesn’t ‘look’ like one of the Westboro group, their signs all have a common font and theme, and I’ve never seen them use the Turn or Burn slogan, so he seems like a more standard religious conservative. “Mostly harmless”?
The size of his sign puts him near the edge of my limits of acceptable normal public civil discourse. At some point, you go past self-expression into self-advertisement that doesn’t have a place in my public sphere, as it infringes unfairly on everyone else’s use of that space.
I’ve got it. I Know why they deserve Hell. They stole his boat, so he had to turn his mast and sail into a sign castigating them.
Err… Perhaps my comment (#4), is a little clearer now, after what began there about three and a half months later, in mid-September?…
