1950s Parisian Strippers
Photographer Frank Horvat bribed a doorman 5000 francs at the Le Sphinx strip club in 1950s Paris. The money bought him just fifteen minutes inside, during which he shot four rolls of film (and several very famous photos) before the girls got mad and had him thrown out:

For anyone curious and playing along at home, 5000 Old Francs was about $14.25 at the time, or about $125 in today’s dollars adjusted for inflation. It was a pretty good bribe, but no wonder he had nothing left to tip the dancers.
Thanks, Adrian! I was curious, but I didn’t know how to go about working that out.
I have a vast mental library of “how to find completely useless information”, so it was a fun little distraction from being up too early.
In this case, everything before the early 1970s is based (more or less) on gold. You can look up the value of an Old Franc in gold during a given year, then the same for a US dollar, and do a direct conversion (350 old francs to a dollar from September 1949 through August 1957). We take that number to the inflation calculator at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (http://data.bls...lc.pl) and eyeball from there. It’s… imperfect, for a number of reasons, but close enough for conversation.
Nifty! I’m pretty clear on how arbitrary value comparisons can become when viewed across large expanses of time and across national borders, but it’s still fun to have a rough notion.
