On Set Advocates For Porn Performers
This is interesting: the studio that produces the porn-for-women site Sssh.com and the venerable BDSM website Wasteland has posted a very specific bill “On-Set Policies And Best Practices” that includes an extra layer of protection for performer consent, going beyond anything I’ve ever heard of before: an on-set advocate for performers.
When you shoot with us, you will have an on-set advocate at all times. Regardless of what was pre-negotiated, your advocate will call “pause” if you exhibit signs of being distressed, uncomfortable or if the advocate is concerned for any reason. Shooting will only resume after a check-in with you, and after both you and the advocate consent to continuing.
In a recent Buzzfeed article, Sssh.com director/producer Angie Rowntree explains the thinking behind the new policies document:
“For us that meant taking our old ‘on-set policies’ and adding to them the things we’ve been doing for the last few years to make sure our set was safe, that consent was clear and we were transparent,” Angie Rowntree told BuzzFeed News. “Bottom-line: our goal is for everyone to have a fantastic experience, feel like part of a team and at the end of the day, I want performers to say, ‘I want to shoot with them again.'”

This reminds me of when James Lipton was interviewed instead of being the interviewer, apparently at one point he worked as a ‘mec’, basically a spruiker for a bordello, he’d go to the airport and say “I can show you the parts of Paris you Really came here to see”, and he’d get a cut of the business he’d bring in. He worked for the girls, they didn’t work for him. Here in Australia you can order an in-home strip show using a phone app, but each dancer brings a minder who generally works for her, they’re in charge of making sure she’s safe and in control of the room at all times.
First I’ve heard of this as *studio policy*, and I strongly support it; had heard of a performer who always brought her [large] boyfriend along to perform essentially that function at the [now closed and replaced] InSex studio, due to doubts about PD *consistently* respecting consent and limits. This was mentioned in an IRC chatroom by someone who said she was that model, which I believe but cannot prove [and have forgotten the name, sorry].
I hope this practice spreads to all sorts of porn [and non-porn?] including BDSM, gonzo, vanilla, etc.
