Avoiding That “Fate Worse Than Death”
It’s almost impossible to find a men’s magazine cartoon from the mid-20th century that doesn’t openly revel in the unabashed rape culture on display in the male-only spaces of the day. This one from the February 1964 HQ magazine is no exception:
My amusement at the cartoon stems from the skeptical look on the delicious babe, as she considers the dude’s self-serving “argument” against taking that fatal plunge.

I had always assumed that the fate worse than death was not rape but the Magdalene Laundries and their ilk that came after the consensual sex.
