1970s Carnival Dancers
In the 1970s photographer Susan Meiselas followed carnivals around New England, taking photos of their striptease dancers. (It’s my impression of the times that the relative ratios of “strip” and “tease” probably varied with the jurisdiction where the carnival found itself.)

Or good old European Muscle Dancing as the spruiker used to say in Carnivale (2003 TV show), where the two dancers were his daughters, taught by their mother… That was a strange and excellent series.
Looks like that shot might have provided the inspiration for Old Crow Medicine Show’s ‘Wagon Wheel’ video.

On a long-term temp assignment at the Maryland Department of Education, I worked with a woman who had an illegitimate child by a carnival worker. I imagined furtive, sordid coupling in the ticket booth. Afterwards he gave her a handful of dingy tickets for free rides on the roller coaster, with his jism trickling down her thigh.
