Lesbians With Legal Impunity
It turns out that back in the day, when homosexuality was illegal (for various values of illegal) in most places in the United States, the laws as written were targeted pretty directly at male homosexuality. Lesbians, most places, got off fairly easily, or was not targeted by the law at all. This lesbian impunity was the subject of the following headline in the May, 1957 Sir! magazine, along with a very fetching butch-presenting model:

It seems worth noting, though, that up until and sometimes beyond the mid-twentieth century in many U.S. cities, lesbians who dressed as men in public were breaking the law and subject to police harassment. See, e.g. http://forallev...6.pdf
Yup! It’s also worth pointing out that my post here is just pretty much parroting the editorial content from Sir!, which is perilous at best; magazines like this were not noted for their editorial accuracy.
