Thanks for this link! If you poke around the site, you find not only the shunga, but interesting technical details about the workshop that the site is from — stuff like evaluating the tears and patches in the prints, the fineness of the inking for the geisha’s hair, and so on.
Heh. Is this from one of those “spring pictures” books?
I heard that in the 1700s Japanese teen girls often got those from friends and family so that they could spend time learning about sex before doing it :) (which shows you how far behind the times some other people are these days…).
Unfortunately, illiteracy was higher in the 1700s. However, even the illiterates didn’t get left out, because some “spring pictures” books were made specifically for them. These had *everything* illustrated so you didn’t need to read to get the point.
